WOLFVILLE, N.S. – Acadia University's Department of Athletics announced today, a record 150 U SPORTS Academic All-Canadians from the 2020-21 academic year. The previous record was 122 set in 2019-20
"The record number of Academic All-Canadians at Acadia University speaks volumes about the quality of our student-athletes, and also our coaches, staff, professors, and the entire campus community," said Dr. Peter Ricketts, Acadia President, and Vice-Chancellor. "These students make Acadia extremely proud, and they represent the very best of what university sport is all about."
U SPORTS student-athletes must maintain a grade point average (GPA) of at least 3.50 during the academic year while competing in a varsity sport. Of 287 student-athletes, 52% were named as Academic All-Canadians in the 2020-2021 academic year. The average Sessional GPA of the 150 Academic All-Canadians was 3.91 and a cumulative GPA of 3.71.
Along with maintaining a high academic average, Acadia's student-athletes also spend countless hours dedicated to their sport performance along with many hours engaged in community service.
2020-21 Academic All-Canadians
"It is a tremendous accomplishment and honour to be recognized as an Academic All-Canadian. I hope every one of the 150 student-athletes who achieved this during the 2020 – 2021 academic year are proud of their accomplishment. Their time commitment and dedication to their academics, their sport, and being involved in their community, is incredibly motivating to watch. The challenges that our student-athletes, coaches, and staff have faced over the past two years make this record number of Academic All-Canadians even more special. I am very proud of how they represent Acadia Athletics and Acadia University," noted Acadia Athletics Director Brian Finniss.
Of Acadia's eleven varsity teams, women's soccer posted the highest percentage of Academic All-Canadians - 84% of their active roster. Female student-athletes accounted for 58% of Acadia's Academic All-Canadians. The team with the highest number of Academic All-Canadians was the football team with 28.
Due to the ongoing pandemic, the Academic All-Canadian Celebration that usually takes place in November will be merged with the year-end Fred G. Kelly Awards to be scheduled in early April following the athletic season.
