Axemen fall 30-8 to Huskies at Raymond Field
WOLFVILLE, N.S. – The Acadia Axemen dropped a 30-8 decision to the Saint Mary's Huskies on Saturday afternoon at Raymond Field.
After a scoreless first quarter, Acadia broke through early in the second when Nick Swain connected on a 28-yard field goal to put the Axemen ahead 3-0.
Saint Mary's responded with three straight scores. Quarterback Justin Shibley found Cherokee Robinson for a 13-yard touchdown, Malik Williams punched in a one-yard run, and Onochie Amuta returned an interception 34 yards for another major. The Huskies carried a 21-3 lead late into the half before Swain hit from 40 yards to cut the deficit to 21-6 at the break.
The Axemen defence forced a safety in the third quarter to trim the gap to 21-8. However, the Huskies added a 29-yard field goal from Adam Johnston and a single off a Cameron Brown punt to extend their lead.
In the fourth quarter, Johnston added another field goal from 35 yards, and Saint Mary's sealed the game with a late safety to make it 30-8.
Swain went two-for-two on field goals and added the safety to account for all of Acadia's scoring. Running back Noah Potter carried 17 times for 37 yards. Quarterback Tyran Duval threw for 74 yards, with Jase LeBlanc hauling in three catches for 38 yards and Xander Matheson adding five receptions for 32.
On defence, Dominick Godreau and Cody Croucher recorded interceptions, while Brandon Kamenz and Riley Comeau led the way with five and four tackles.
With the loss, Acadia moved to 0-3 on the season.
The Axemen return to action Friday, October 3, on the road against StFX. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
