Acadia secures commitment from 6'6 lineman Cameron Speers
The Axemen football program has added size and leadership to its offensive line with the commitment of Cameron Speers, a 6'6, 315-pound lineman from Nepean, Ont.
Speers will join the Axemen after graduating from Merivale High School in 2026 and plans to study history at Acadia.
A relative newcomer to football, Speers’ development has been rapid. He suited up with the Myers Riders U19 program during the 2025 season, competing in the National Capital Amateur Football Association. Despite being early in his football career, Speers quickly established himself as a key presence in the trenches.
He served as a team captain and was named Offensive Lineman of the Year, earning a spot in the league’s all-star game. His season included several strong individual performances, highlighted by a 10-pancake game that showcased both his physical strength and growing understanding of the position.
Speers said committing to Acadia came faster than he ever expected.
“If you told me six months ago that I’d be committed to play university football, I would’ve said you were crazy,” Speers said. “I’m extremely excited and honoured to commit to play for the Axemen. The program culture and school environment will help me thrive as I continue my football and academic journey.”
Before turning his focus to football, Speers built a strong athletic foundation across multiple sports. He played elite competitive lacrosse for 12 years, captained his high school rugby team, and was also involved with his school’s curling program. Off the field, he has served as a peer mentor for Grade 9 students and worked as a camp counsellor, experiences that helped shape his leadership skills.
That combination of size, athletic background, and character made Speers an appealing addition for the Axemen as they continue to build depth along the offensive line.
