Acadia signs basketball head coach Baur to contract

WOLFVILLE, NS – Acadia University Director of Athletics Kevin Dickie today announced the contract extension of Axemen Basketball head coach Stephen Baur.

Baur was signed to a multi-year contract and heads into his seventh season this coming fall after being named the Atlantic University Sport men's basketball Coach of the Year for his first time this past season.

Baur, who was an assistant coach with the Axemen up to the end of the 2008 season, became head coach of Acadia in the fall of 2008. In his six seasons with the Axemen, Baur has posted a 66-54 regular season record and led the team to six consecutive AUS playoff appearances along with three CIS Final 8 including last year.  In that same time span, Acadia has won three CIS All-Rookie Team awards, five AUS All-Rookie Team awards, five AUS All-Stars, one AUS Most Valuable Player Award, one Ken Shields nominee and three time CIS All-Canadian.

"Acadia has been a part of me for as long as I can remember.  As a student, as an assistant, and now as the coach it has been a dream come true", said Baur. "Now is a very exciting time at Acadia Athletics with the support, leadership and dedication of senior administration including athletic director Kevin Dickie. The support of  the community and the students is unlike anywhere else.  I am looking forward to my continued future at Acadia".

Acadia's Director of Athletics, Kevin Dickie, is pleased with having Baur's contract extended under new terms. "We are very fortunate to have an extremely solid and generally speaking, senior group of coaches at Acadia. For both our department and the basketball team, I am so pleased that Stephen will continue to provide his veteran leadership for the coming year with our Axemen program", indicated Dickie. "Basketball is a big deal at Acadia and within the Annapolis Valley and Steve has played a significant role in the development of the game locally and in the province. He is highly respected nationally as a coach both on the sidelines and as a leader with the national coaches association".

Dickie added, "Securing Steve as a leader of one of our market driven sports keeps Acadia Athletics tracking in a positive direction".

Baur, who has served for the last two years and will continue to serve as Vice President of the Canadian Association of Basketball Coaches, was recently named as the incoming President for 2015.
