Axemen fall to STFX on the road
Acadia fell to STFX 101–71 on Friday night at Coach K Court.
The X-Men shot 53.6 per cent from the field and built separation early, improving to 15-3 on the season. Acadia dropped to 11-7.
Gabe Davignon led the Axemen with 17 points, shooting 6-for-12 from the floor and hitting five 3-pointers. Ryan Regault added 15 points and four assists, finishing 5-for-13 from the field and a perfect 4-for-4 at the free-throw line. Briawne Wilson scored nine points and pulled down four offensive rebounds, while Kyle Munro contributed defensively with two steals and two assists.
StFX set the tone early. Owen Frayne and DJ Jackson combined to give the home side a 4–0 lead inside the opening minute. Acadia struggled to protect the ball, and the X-Men turned early turnovers into points to extend their advantage.
Jackson knocked down a 3-pointer at the 7:37 mark as StFX continued to pull away. Davignon and Donovan Reid provided scoring for Acadia, but the X-Men maintained control throughout the opening half. StFX opened up a 20-point lead late in the period and went into the break ahead 36–18.
The X-Men continued to press in the second quarter, leaning on balanced scoring and bench production. Gabe Marcotullio and Tariq Armstrong each connected from beyond the arc, with Marcotullio's 3-pointer at 4:52 pushing the lead to 26 points. Acadia found some success from the perimeter through Davignon, but StFX closed the half with a 24–17 scoring edge to maintain firm control.
Davignon opened the third quarter with a 3-pointer at 9:33, then added another less than a minute later as Acadia looked to respond. Jeff Ngandu answered with a dunk for StFX, and Jackson continued to apply pressure at the free-throw line.
Regault sparked a brief run for the Axemen, but the X-Men answered consistently. A jumper by Phoenyx Wyse in the final minute capped the quarter, sending StFX into the fourth with a 79–53 lead, their largest margin to that point.
StFX maintained control in the final quarter, extending the lead to as many as 32 points following a jumper from Lucas Mate with 53 seconds remaining. Acadia received late baskets from Malko Young and Wilson, along with free throws from Aaron Simmons, but could not close the gap.
Jackson led StFX with 22 points and two steals. Matt Pennell added 17 points, hitting five 3-pointers, while Wyse finished with 18 points and seven rebounds. Frayne contributed nine points and seven assists.
