Axemen Roll Past Dalhousie; Davignon Reaches 1,000-Point Milestone
Regault hits six threes as Acadia’s defence limits Tigers to six second-half points in 88-58 win
Acadia delivered a dominant second-half performance Thursday night, defeating Dalhousie 88-58 at Stu Aberdeen Court.
The Axemen recorded 12 steals and held the Tigers to just six points in the third quarter to break the game open.
Ryan Regault led Acadia with 18 points, knocking down six three-pointers. Aaron Simmons added 12 points on 5-of-6 shooting and dished out four assists. Briawne Wilson finished with 12 points, made all four free throws and blocked two shots. Gabe Davignon scored nine points and added two steals.
With his nine points, Davignon reached 1,000 career points in an Axemen uniform. He becomes the 14th player in program history to reach the milestone and now sits 14th all-time, just behind Kevin Lee (1,006).
Dalhousie opened the scoring on a layup by Lydell Husbands at 9:38. Acadia answered quickly. Kyle Munro scored inside and Regault hit a three-pointer off a pass from Donovan Reid.
The teams traded leads through the opening half. A jumper from Malko Young gave Acadia a 22-17 edge with 1:12 remaining. Dalhousie closed the gap when Samuel Olugu hit a three-pointer with two seconds left. Acadia led 22-20 at the break.
The game shifted decisively in the third quarter. Acadia outscored Dalhousie 30-6 in the period. Regault and Davignon combined for multiple three-pointers as the lead grew quickly. Davignon hit a three at 4:59, assisted by Simmons, to extend the margin. Wilson added a dunk with 3:18 remaining.
Dalhousie managed only two field goals in the quarter and trailed by 29 heading into the fourth.
Acadia continued to control play in the final period. A layup by Robbie Grant early in the quarter pushed the lead past 25. Munro followed with another basket to give the Axemen their largest lead of 30. Regault added two more three-pointers in the fourth, while Simmons contributed a layup and a three of his own.
Dalhousie was led by Husbands with 12 points and Isaiah Graham-Roache with 11.
Acadia wraps up the regular season Saturday night on the road in Sydney against Cape Breton.
