Heart of the Axe: BrendanTomilson
"Just as I had hoped, my time at Acadia has been nothing short of extraordinary. The combination of high-level hockey and a world-class education has been a dream come true. Balancing the demands of being a student-athlete has taught me valuable life skills, such as time management and perseverance."
Heart of the Axe is a weekly feature from the perspective of Axemen and Axewomen student-athletes. It dives deeper into why they decided to attend Acadia, what drives them athletically, how they got started in their sport, the impact Acadia has had on them during their time in Wolfville and much more.
This week's feature athlete is third-year hockey Axeman and business administration major Brendan Tomilson. Tomilson talks about what his expectations were when he decided to come to Acadia and how it has exceeded every expectation. He discusses the community, hockey program and more in this week's feature.
I may have grown up in Ontario, but I have always loved the East Coast.
As a member of the Acadia men's hockey team, I feel incredibly fortunate to be part of a program that has embraced me with open arms.
I first experienced the allure of the East Coast when I played for the Halifax Mooseheads in the QMJHL.
The picturesque landscapes, friendly communities, and passion for hockey made it a special place.
So, when the opportunity arose to continue my hockey journey at Acadia, nestled in the town of Wolfville, I knew it was the perfect fit.
Today, as I lace up my skates and don the Acadia jersey, I carry the pride of representing a university and a community that have become an integral part of my life.
THE ROAD LESS TRAVELLED
My path to Acadia was anything but conventional.
After spending my 20-year-old year back in Ontario, I had initially committed to another university. However, something just didn't feel right.
I made the difficult decision to decommit and explore other options.
That's when the connection with Acadia fell into place.
The coaching staff and I found common ground, and it became clear that this was the place I was meant to be.
Joining the Acadia hockey program has been one of the best decisions of my life. The combination of a strong hockey tradition, a dedicated coaching staff, and a supportive community has created an environment where I can thrive both on and off the ice.
It's a place where I've found my home away from home.
A SPECIAL PLACE
There is something truly special about being part of the community that revolves around Acadia University.
It's not just about the hockey team; it's about the impact we have on the town and the connection we share with the people who support us.
From leading hockey camps to participating in community programs like SMILE, we have the privilege of making a difference in the lives of others.
One of the most rewarding aspects of my hockey career has been the opportunity to play a higher level of hockey while also pursuing an education.
Not many people get the chance to have both, and I'm grateful to Acadia for providing me with this unique experience.
It's become ingrained in the fabric of who I am, and I carry that pride with me every time I step onto the ice.
There's a sense of joy and excitement that comes with being part of such a close-knit group. We push each other to be better, both on and off the ice, and that camaraderie translates into success.
FINDING BALANCE
One of the most rewarding aspects of my time at Acadia has been the opportunity to balance my passion for hockey with my pursuit of education.
As a finance student, I'm able to focus on my studies while continuing to excel on the ice. It's a rare privilege to compete at such a high level while also earning a degree.
This balance has been instrumental in shaping me into a well-rounded individual.
The lessons I've learned in the classroom have complemented the skills I've honed on the ice, preparing me for whatever the future may hold.
Whether it's a career in professional hockey or the financial services industry, I feel confident that Acadia has equipped me with the tools I need to succeed.
A SPECIAL JOURNEY
Before I even set foot on the ice as an Acadia Axemen, my journey was already filled with unforgettable moments and experiences.
Playing major junior hockey for the Halifax Mooseheads was a dream come true. The opportunity to compete at such a high level and share the ice with talented players from all over Canada and the world was truly remarkable.
The most rewarding part of my major junior career was the ability to focus solely on perfecting my craft. With the support of the Halifax community and the incredible fan base, I was able to immerse myself in the game I loved and push myself to new heights.
But it was the friendships I made along the way that truly made my time in major junior meaningful. The bonds formed with teammates and the camaraderie we shared both on and off the ice created memories that will last a lifetime.
As I transitioned to Acadia, I knew that my journey was far from over. The experiences and lessons I gained in major junior hockey became the foundation for my time with the Axemen.
And just as I had hoped, my time at Acadia has been nothing short of extraordinary.
The combination of high-level hockey and a world-class education has been a dream come true. Balancing the demands of being a student-athlete has taught me valuable life skills, such as time management and perseverance.
And of course, the support of the Acadia community has been instrumental in my success. From the passionate fans who fill the arena to the dedicated coaching staff and my incredible teammates, I feel grateful to be part of such a close-knit and supportive environment.
As I look back on my journey, I can't help but feel a sense of pride and gratitude for all the opportunities and experiences I've had. From major junior hockey to Acadia, each step has shaped me into the player and person I am today.
And while my time at Acadia may eventually come to an end, the memories and lessons will always be a part of me as I continue to chase my dreams both on and off the ice.
LEAVING A LASTING IMPACT
As I reflect on my journey so far, I'm reminded of the countless memories and experiences that have defined my time at Acadia.
From the close-knit bond with my teammates to the incredible support from the community and alumni, every moment has been cherished.
But I also know that this journey is far from over.
With one more year ahead of me, I'm determined to make the most of every opportunity that comes my way. Whether it's on the ice, in the classroom, or in the community, I want to leave a lasting impact and continue to contribute to the rich tradition of Acadia hockey.
When the time comes to hang up my Acadia jersey, I'll carry the lessons, friendships, and memories with me as I embark on the next chapter of my life.
Whether it's playing professional hockey or pursuing a career in finance, I'll always be grateful for the time I've spent at Acadia and the East Coast community that has become my second family.
A LASTING MEMORY
And finally as I think of my time thus far on the ice, one of my favorite memories is our sweep of StFX during my first year.
It was a special moment, not just because of the victory, but because of the support we received from the town and alumni. Seeing the community rally behind us and join in the celebration afterward was a testament to the impact we have as a team.
And as I look back on my time at Acadia, I'm reminded of the biggest lesson I've learned: to not take it for granted.
Junior hockey flew by, and I don't want to look back and realize I didn't fully appreciate every moment. So, I make a conscious effort to slow down, enjoy the little moments, and cherish the time I have with my teammates.
