Defenceman Brayden Schmitt commits to Axemen hockey
The Acadia Axemen have added a proven, high-level defenceman to their lineup with the commitment of Bible Hill, N.S., native Brayden Schmitt ahead of the 2024–25 season.
The 5'11, right-shot blue-liner brings five seasons of QMJHL experience, having played 273 regular season games with the Blainville-Boisbriand Armada and the Cape Breton Eagles. Schmitt compiled 135 points during his major junior career and added eight more in 29 playoff games, including a key role in Cape Breton’s 2024 postseason run.
“I am very excited and happy to commit to Acadia, and to be able to play in Nova Scotia in front of my family and friends is something I love and look forward to,” said Schmitt.
Schmitt’s roots in Nova Scotia hockey run deep. Prior to his QMJHL debut, he recorded 26 points in 35 regular season games with the Weeks Major Midgets of the NSMMHL, along with six points in 11 playoff games in 2019–20.
Acadia head coach Darren Burns said Schmitt’s combination of talent, leadership, and experience makes him an ideal addition to the program.
“Brayden’s positive impact will be immediate on campus and in the community,” said Burns. “He is familiar with the importance and responsibilities that accompany playing hockey here at Acadia. He’s a natural leader. His career to date speaks for itself and he will be a huge addition for our program. His smooth skating and offensive ability is a perfect fit for our Olympic-size ice.”
