Axemen draw 1–1 with Memorial
WOLFVILLE, N.S. — The Acadia Axemen earned a 1–1 draw with the Memorial Sea-Hawks in Atlantic University Sport men's soccer on Friday night at Raymond Field.
Memorial took the lead in the 14th minute. Kyle Ryan pounced on a loose ball and finished unassisted to make it 1–0. Earlier, the visitors threatened through Rodion Kichimov and Andy Knight, with Knight's header drifting wide. Acadia's best first-half look came from Sam Young, whose shot was stopped by goalkeeper Ben Collingwood. The Axemen also generated pressure from corners taken by Young, but the Sea-Hawks carried a one-goal advantage to halftime.
Acadia answered less than two minutes into the second half. In the 47th minute, Blaise Mellema collected a loose ball and scored unassisted to level the match at 1–1. Memorial's Luke Peddle was cautioned shortly after the restart as the pace lifted.
Chances fell to both sides down the stretch. Memorial's Santiago Herrera and Daniel Courage tested goalkeeper Dylan Legere, while Anderson Peters fired high in the 58th minute and later forced a save from Collingwood after Nathan Amoah-Gyekye and Thomas Connell came on. In stoppage time, Jabu Deng had a shot blocked before Acadia's final corner was cleared. Legere denied Hashem Khalifa in the dying seconds to preserve the point.
Acadia out-cornered Memorial 5–3 and finished with seven shots, three on target. Memorial registered nine shots, four on goal. Legere made three saves for the Axemen; Collingwood stopped two for the Sea-Hawks. Cautions were shown to Memorial's Courage (39'), Peddle (48') and Khalifa (71'), and to Acadia's Jacob Balys (41'). Attendance was listed at 293.
