Russell’s double-double leads Axewomen past StFX
WOLFVILLE, N.S. — Acadia beat StFX 63–58 on Friday at Stu Aberdeen Court. The Axewomen led 12–10 after the first quarter but trailed 34–28 at halftime. They outscored StFX 18–11 in the third and 17–13 in the fourth to close it out.
Samantha Russell led Acadia with 22 points and 11 rebounds. She shot 5-for-11 from the field, 3-for-6 from three and 9-for-11 at the line. She added four assists and four steals in 40 minutes.
Bianca Helmig scored 15 points, including 3-for-5 from three. She finished with eight assists, five steals and three rebounds. Sarah Delorey had 12 points and five boards, with a block and a steal. Emily Nunes-Sabean added nine points, three rebounds and two blocks. Taya Dixon had five points and six rebounds.
Acadia shot 33.9 per cent from the floor, 47.4 per cent from three (9-for-19) and 76.2 per cent at the line (16-for-21). StFX shot 37.1 per cent and 20.0 per cent from three (6-for-30), and went 6-for-11 on free throws. StFX held a 34–30 edge on the glass, but Acadia scored 20 points off 23 StFX turnovers and had an 8–2 advantage in second-chance points. The game featured eight ties and 12 lead changes.
