Helmig scores 22 as Acadia powers past Saint Mary’s
Acadia defeated Saint Mary's 74-62 on Saturday night at the Homburg Centre, building a double-digit lead in the second quarter and holding firm through the second half. The Axewomen led by as many as 13 in the third quarter and finished with 13 points off 11 Huskies turnovers.
Bianca Helmig led Acadia with 22 points, hitting four three-pointers and adding seven rebounds. Sarah Delorey posted a double-double with 14 points and 15 rebounds. Samantha Russell contributed 13 points, seven rebounds and three steals, while Emily Nunes-Sabean added 12 points, two threes and four assists.
Kalli Georgoulias led Saint Mary's with 17 points and six rebounds. Emily Dikdan scored 16 points and went 3-for-5 from three, while Angong Jacob added 13 points, three assists and five boards. Molly Healy finished with eight points, three blocks and five assists, and Lauren Armstrong recorded five points, three blocks and six rebounds.
Acadia opened with a 14–11 first-quarter lead, using six assists to generate balanced scoring and limiting the Huskies to one made three. The Axewomen continued to build momentum in the second quarter, converting turnovers into points and shooting 9-for-15 from the field. A 23–15 advantage in the frame pushed Acadia ahead 37–26 at halftime.
Saint Mary's narrowed the margin in the third quarter, outscoring Acadia 19–14, but the Axewomen stayed in control by converting five of six free throws and securing 14 rebounds. Acadia held the Huskies to six made field goals in the period and carried a 51–45 lead into the fourth.
Acadia closed the game with a strong final quarter, shooting 71 per cent from three and generating points off timely defensive stops. Nunes-Sabean's three at the 3:00 mark helped restore a comfortable lead, and Acadia held Saint Mary's to 31 per cent shooting in the frame. The Axewomen sealed the 12-point victory to improve to 6–3.
