Axewomen pull away late for road win at Memorial
Acadia earned a 73–55 road win over Memorial on Friday night at the Field House, using a strong fourth quarter to create separation. The Axewomen led by as many as 18 points, controlled the paint and dominated the glass to secure the victory.
Acadia finished with 48 points in the paint, recorded eight blocks and held a 47–32 rebounding edge.
Sarah Delorey led the Axewomen with 28 points, 12 rebounds and three blocks. Samantha Russell added 12 points, nine rebounds and five assists, along with two steals and two blocks. Bianca Helmig contributed nine points, four assists and five rebounds, while Taya Dixon added six points, eight rebounds and a block.
Memorial was led by Serena Phillips, who scored 14 points and added three assists and three steals. Amelia Mitchell also scored 14 points, connecting on two three-pointers, while Brooke Ledevehat finished with eight points, seven rebounds and three steals.
Acadia set the tone early by attacking the paint in the opening quarter. The Axewomen scored 18 points inside and held a 22–19 lead after ten minutes. Dixon delivered a key block in the closing seconds of the quarter, and Delorey controlled the boards while converting multiple layups to keep Acadia in front.
The second quarter was tightly contested. Memorial edged Acadia 16–13 in the frame, using a rebounding advantage to slow the visitors. Acadia briefly built a six-point lead midway through the quarter by scoring in transition, but Memorial responded with second-chance points. The teams went into halftime tied 35–35.
Acadia regained momentum in the third quarter. The Axewomen outscored Memorial 14–9, scoring ten points in the paint and recording five blocks. Delorey and Russell anchored the defense, limiting Memorial's interior looks and helping Acadia take a 49–44 lead into the final quarter.
The Axewomen closed the game with their strongest stretch. Acadia outscored Memorial 24–11 in the fourth, shooting efficiently and converting nine of ten free throws. The defense limited Memorial to four field goals in the quarter and controlled the boards, preventing second-chance opportunities. Acadia's inside play continued to pay dividends as the lead grew into double digits before the final buzzer.
Acadia improves to 9–4 on the season and will face Memorial again on Saturday at 6 p.m. NT.
