Sommer commits to Acadia Axewomen rugby program
Acadia University’s rugby program is keeping local talent close to home with the commitment of Wolfville native Caitria Sommer for the 2026 Atlantic University Sport (AUS) season.
A 5-foot-5 forward who plays both 8-man and flanker, Sommer joins the Axewomen after a decorated high school and provincial rugby career. A soon-to-be graduate of Horton High School, she helped lead the Griffins to both regional and provincial Division 1 championships in 2024.
Sommer also suited up for the Nova Scotia Keltics from 2022 to 2024, competing at the provincial level and further developing her game against some of the best young players in the country. Earlier in her career, she played for the Valley Rugby Union club from 2016 to 2019.
Her decision to continue her academic and athletic journey at Acadia carries special meaning.
“I’m very excited to join Acadia’s varsity rugby team and be part of the very community that helped shape and inspire my development as a rugby athlete,” Sommer said.
She will enrol in the Bachelor of Science in Biology program when she begins her studies in Wolfville.
Sommer is the latest addition to an Axewomen program known for blending high-level performance with a strong sense of culture and community. Her commitment strengthens Acadia’s forward pack heading into the future and reflects the program’s investment in homegrown talent.
