After four seasons with the Axewomen rugby program, Olivia Savoie is closing out her Acadia career with perspective shaped by growth, resilience and championship experience. The Garnett Settlement, N.S., native - a kinesiology graduate who was part of Acadia’s 2024-25 AUS championship team - appeared in all six conference games in her senior season, scoring three tries. As she prepares for convocation, Savoie reflects on a journey defined not just by performance, but by the people, challenges and moments that made Acadia feel like home.
There’s a moment when it all hits you.
As a graduating senior, that moment for me was in the fall of 2025.
I don’t remember the exact date or time, but I do remember the feeling.
The feeling of putting on my Axewomen rugby jersey - knowing that soon, I won’t be putting it on anymore.
That I’ll be moving on from Wolfville, the place I’ve called home for the past four years.
It’s a bittersweet feeling.
On one hand, I’m excited for what’s next and to see what the future holds.
On the other hand, it’s hard to believe my time at Acadia is coming to an end.
In some ways, it feels like I just got here.
But as I reflect on my journey, it’s clear that the person I was in the fall of 2022 is not the same person I am today.
Why Acadia - Finding Belonging
Like many people, I chose Acadia for the community and sense of belonging I felt when I first visited.
The small-town charm of Wolfville, the stunning campus, and the welcoming atmosphere all drew me in.
And when I put on the Axewomen jersey for the first time, it was an overwhelming feeling of pride and recognition that all my hard work had paid off.
I was excited for the journey ahead, not fully understanding just how transformative it would be.
The Moments That Defined It
Looking back, there are countless moments that stand out.
One of my favourites was playing in the AUS Championship final in 2024.
I remember looking into the stands and seeing the immense support from the Acadia community.
Winning that game, surrounded by Acadia fans, and being able to celebrate with everyone - it was the greatest moment.
That season, the 2024-25 year, was special.
You could feel it at every practice, lift, speed session, and game.
We were truly a family, and we showed up for each other every single day.
We wanted it so badly that anything else simply wasn’t acceptable.
The People Who Shaped Me
Throughout my time at Acadia, there have been many individuals who have had a profound impact on me.
One person who stands out is my professor, Ann Dodge.
She has always been inspiring, encouraging, and, most importantly, she cared.
I hope to carry the lessons she taught me beyond Acadia.
She truly is a hallmark in the Acadia community and has left an everlasting impression on me.
My teammates, coaches, and staff have also played a significant role in shaping me as a person and as a player.
They taught me the importance of perseverance, resilience, and being part of something bigger than myself.
I am forever grateful for their support and guidance.
The Challenge That Changed Everything
Of course, my journey at Acadia wasn’t without its challenges.
In my third year, I tore my ACL and meniscus, which was undoubtedly the biggest challenge I faced during my time as a student-athlete.
It was a difficult and emotionally draining time, but with the support of my friends, family, and the Acadia community, I was able to overcome it.
They helped me see the end goal, which was to play rugby to the best of my ability.
That challenge taught me the value of a strong support system and the power of perseverance.
Growth - As an Athlete and Person
Being a varsity athlete at Acadia has shaped me in ways I never imagined.
Balancing academics and athletics taught me valuable time management skills and the importance of discipline.
I learned how to excel in both aspects of my life and became a more well-rounded individual as a result.
As a person, being a varsity athlete taught me how to persevere and be strong in the face of adversity.
It changed me for the better and made me part of a community that I will always cherish.
What Made Acadia Special
The Acadia community played a significant role in enriching my experience.
The fans, alumni, and staff were always encouraging and supportive.
They knew us personally and cared about our success both on and off the field.
It was always special to hear from alumni, especially those from the women’s rugby program, and to feel their continued support.
Walking down Main Street and having fans express their excitement and support was a constant reminder of the community’s unwavering dedication.
Speaking to the Next Group
To future Acadia athletes, I have one piece of advice: savor every moment.
Time flies by, and before you know it, your four years will feel like four minutes.
Show up, even when you don’t feel like it, and embrace every opportunity.
The memories you create and the lessons you learn will stay with you for a lifetime.
Looking Ahead — What Comes Next
As I prepare to graduate, I’m hoping to continue my education and pursue a career in Occupational Therapy.
My time at Acadia has prepared me beyond belief for what lies ahead.
The courses I’ve taken, the volunteer opportunities with programs like S.M.I.L.E. and Kinderskills, and the support of professors like Roxanne Seaman have equipped me with the knowledge and skills I need to succeed.
Staying Connected — This Isn’t the End
While my time as a student-athlete at Acadia may be coming to an end, my connection to this incredible institution and community will remain.
I look forward to returning to Wolfville, watching games, and staying connected with teammates and the program.
The Axewomen rugby team will always hold a special place in my heart, and I will forever be grateful for the experiences and opportunities I had at Acadia.
From the first time I put on that jersey to the last, I didn’t just represent Acadia — I was part of Acadia.
And I always will be.
