Axewomen finish first overall in AUS standings

WOLFVILLE, N.S. - The Axewomen soccer team's 2-0 win over the visiting Moncton Aigles Bleus solidified a first place finish in the 2015 AUS standings.

The Axewomen posted a 10-1-2 record, bettering the second place Cape Breton Capers by a single point. Michelle Pryde, a senior striker from Calgary Alta. scored the first and eventual game winner for the Axewomen three minutes into the second half. Pryde's goal was assisted by Katie Ross and was here eighth goal of the season and third game winner. 

Meghan Earle, of Mt. Pearl, Nfld., notched her twelth goal of the season in 11 games at the 76th minute to give Acadia an insurance goal for the win. Gemma LeBlanc picked up the assist on Earle's goal. Earle finished the season with 12 goals and 2 assists - second to league leader Keona Simmonds of the Capers who topped Earle with 13 goals and 2 assists. 

The Axewomen posted 20 shots with nine shots on goal, while Moncton tested Acadia with only 3 shots and all three on goal.

"It was nice to clinch first place and the team can be proud of the work they put in", commented head coach Amit Batra after the game. Adding, "All of this work was just to get a bye in the first round. A whole new season awaits us." 

This year's championship tournament is hosted by the Universite de Moncton. The first place finish by the Axewomen gives Acadia a bye of the quarterfinals leading to the Semi-Final game against the lowest seeded team to advance from Thursday's quarterfinals.
