Goal in 81st minute gives Axewomen 1-0 win over Tigers

WOLFVILLE, N.S. – A goal at the 81^st minute by first-year midfielder Madyson Harris, gave the Axewomen an important win over the visiting Dalhousie Tigers. The win gives Acadia 17 points – tied with second-place Cape Breton, but the Capers have a game in hand heading into this weekend.

The win is Acadia's second victory in a row after a 1-0 win over StFX this past weekend. Harris was named the Subway Player of the Game for her game winning goal.

Statistically, the match was tight with the Axewomen posting a 16-10 shots goal advantage but a slip 6-5 saves.

Both keepers were tested and both kept points off the scoreboard until Harris' goal came off of a corner kick by Grace Somers. Harris headed the ball past Dalhousie keeper Annabel Gravely for the eventual game-winner.

Milena Ramirez was stellar with five saves during some testy times in the Acadia box.

"The first half, we completely played defense. Totally played defense, which is good, but that doesn't give us goal opportunities. So, in the second half we just kind of went into it knowing that if we don't score this half, it will be a tie. This is a huge win if we can get it. It's a big team to win against. So, on the corner, we had the will to get that goal. We needed it and wanted it so badly," said team captain Lauren Jodrey after the match.

Both teams have several opportunities including a long kick by Grace Longley that went off the crossbar late in the game before the winning goal.

The Axewomen improve to 5-1-2 and have the Thanksgiving weekend off. Their next games are on the road beginning Saturday, Oct. 16 at StFX followed by a Sunday afternoon game against Cape Breton. Acadia tied Cape Breton 1-1 earlier in September and picked up a 1-0 win over the X-Women last weekend.

Dalhousie drops to 4-2-1 and fifth in the AUS standings. The Tigers travel to UPEI on October 17.
